ABOUT

THE FARM

Terre Noire Farms adjoins the Prairie Ridge at Terre Noire site owned by the Nature Conservancy, and is just down the road from Terre Noire Preserve, principally owned by the Arkansas Department of Natural Heritage.  The Nature Conservancy assists Terre Noire Farms's efforts to preserve and restore our Blackland Prairie through prescribed burning and removing non-native grass species.

BLACKLAND PRAIRIE

Blackland Prairie (terre noire) once covered nearly 12 million acres in Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.  By 1989, less than 15,000 acres remained in relatively natural condition.  Some of the best preserved is next to Terre Noire Farms on properties owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy and the Arkansas Department of Natural Heritage.

THE PIGS

At Terre Noire Farms we raise Tamworth pigs, a heritage breed renowned for its ability to forage grasses, forbs, and woodland mast.  The pigs are a vital part of our restoration plans by helping remove non-native grass species and underbrush, returning our land to prairie and savanna.  Regular rotation through the property prevents damage to the land, allowing it to recover and regenerate.
